Best Petunias To Plant In Drought Areas

If you live somewhere that doesn't get a lot of rain, or if you are living in part of the country currently affected by a drought, plant one of the drought resistant petunias listed below. These flowers can give your yard a little color, without using up too much water.

Why Petunias?

Petunias are a classic spring and summer flower. There are many different varieties of petunias. You can purchase petunias in just about any color imaginable, from purple to red to blue to orange, and a mix of colors in-between. They also come in a variety of different flower sizes. The sheer variety of sizes and colors makes petunias a drought-garden must have.

Taking Care Of Your Petunias

They are really easy to take care of. You just have to water them every seven to ten days. Petunias actually fail to thrive when they are planted in overly moist soil. They can withstand high temperatures and low amounts of water. They thrive best when planted somewhere where they will spend at least half the day or more in the sun.

Specific Varieties That Will Thrive In Your Yard

Here are a few specific varieties of petunias that could look great in your garden this spring and summer:

  • Supertunia Citrus Petunia: The center of this flower is bright yellow, and the edges are a soft white. This variety of petunia can grow up between six to ten inches tall, and tends to spread out as it grows as well.
  • Supertunia Flamingo Petunia: As the name implies, these are bright pink petunias. The center of these petunias tends to be a very dark pink. It grows a little taller than the citrus petunia. The flamingo petunia grows between twelve to sixteen inches tall. It can spread out two or three feet as well.
  • Supertunia Vista Silverberry Petunia: These flowers almost look white, but are actually a very light pink. The petals are streaked with darker pink lines. They are a very elegant looking petunia, and can grow up to two feet tall as well as two feet wide.
  • Supertunia Watermelon Charm Petunia: The flower of the watermelon charm petunia is a very deep, rich red. Like the other supertunia varieties, the watermelon charm petunia can grow to be about a foot tall. It also spreads out about a foot and half to two feet.

These are just a few examples of some of the petunias you could possible purchase for your yard landscaping. The key is to choose colors that you like and that fit in with your other plants.

Check out your local nursery for a larger selection of petunias. In order to use the least amount of water possible, be sure to choose varieties such as the supertunia petunias listed above, that spread out. One plant can cover up to two feet and grow anywhere from six to sixteen inches tall. That way you can get maximum coverage for minimum water output.
